Rolling Dice 2
Miscellaneous Item Generation with the Treasure Tome's Appendix A
Previously we generated a magic bow using the tables in Appendix A of the Treasure Tome. Generating miscellaneous items is a bit different from generating weapons. The initial table to roll on for powers is much smaller, as there aren’t a dozen different options for the weapon’s bonuses to combine with the options for the weapon’s powers. Instead, there’s a tall table to roll on for the form factor of the miscellaneous item.
An example initial set of rolls for a Very Rare miscellaneous item. It has a single Very Rare power, determined to be permanent speak with plants. It takes the form of a Cloak (cape, mantle, shawl). Its item description has the ‘Human’ tag- whatever pattern of image the item contains relates to people and their works. Let’s lean into this a bit, mechanically, as we make the item more than just one-note.
Gardener’s Mantle
Base Cost 77,000gp: Permanent (1/3 turns) Speak with Plants 4th level esoteric effect 76,000gp; Permanent (1/3 turns) drawback 1st level effect -19,000gp; 1/day Plant Growth 5th level effect 25,000gp; 1/day drawback 1st level effect -5,000gp. Apparent Value: 600gp.
This short green cloak is embroidered with colorful images of trees, flowers, and vegetables growing, with the outline of a fence in copper-colored thread around the cloak’s perimeter. The wearer may speak with plants as the spell, but only when in civilized, borderlands, or outlands areas; plants in unsettled areas are too wild for him to converse with. Once per day, when in one of those same areas, the wearer may cast plant growth as the spell. The mantle can sustain up to nine areas of growth, dropping the oldest if another is created.
A drawback, and a secondary power, leave the item with approximately the same cost as the original power. We could have done a similar item from the other end, for a cloak with a ‘Nature’ theme.
